Success Story: Cingular

The Challenge

When Cingular acquired AT&T Wireless and SunCom (another regional player) as part of a continuing expansion strategy, they became the nation’s largest wireless carrier.

This expansion added more than 1,200 corporate locations to the brand family. And Cingular aimed to convert all of these sites within a 6-month time frame—a very ambitious undertaking for such a large and complex program.

The Solution

As a key supplier for this client’s original rollout, Icon had a proven performance record with Cingular. For this expansion, they asked us to handle signage for 130 sites across the Northeast.

With the program launching in November and target completion scheduled for March, Icon recognized that weather would pose a major challenge for installation in this region—particularly due to the fascia patch and repair required after removal of existing sign elements. But with experience and proper preparation, we readily handled this series of installations.

We also managed a complicated variety of landlord approvals within this tight schedule, amending all leases to reflect each location’s new name. And we put our own people in charge of permitting rather than leaving this task in the hands of local installers.

The Result

Icon completed the program within budget and well ahead of deadline—30 days prior to the scheduled completion date.

Cingular kept a report card for each of the 9 vendors selected to manage aspects of this large expansion program, and Icon earned top marks.
